When You’re a Jet…
Posted: September 14th, 2004 | Author: themarkpike | Filed under: Stuff |Yesterday I was drawing parallels between hip-hop and grassroots political organizing. Well, to continue with the comparison, today we had a straight up turf war in the streets of Baltimore. Like, East Coast vs. West Coast style. Bloods vs. Crips. Sharks vs. Jets. This was no joke… We were wearing rival colors and everything.
You see, the zip code we were canvassing was simultaneously being canvassed by representatives from “Save the Children”. They had the hood on lockdown. You can’t be knocking on people’s doors asking for the dollaz after those cats roll through. You simply can’t be putting Kerry’s need for the casheesh in juxtaposition with starving kids.
We had to negotiate some turf with them before things escalated. “Stay South of Cedarcroft Rd. or else we bust out the democratic brass knuckles”.
I hope our goals are one in the same.
