Fo Shizzle, Mezuzah
Posted: September 15th, 2004 | Author: themarkpike | Filed under: Stuff |Recently, when knocking on doors with mezuzahs, I’ve been saying to the jewish residents: “Fo shizzle mezuzah”. I’m kidding. I do, however tell the family, “L’Shana Tova”(Happy New Year).
Historically, for the past 5765 years, the Jewish demographic has been very liberal and progressive and votes the straight democratic ticket. Things have been weird lately. The Israel issue has made many jews single-issue voters. President Bush has tapped into this and driven a deep wedge into the jewish voting bloc. I am extremely hesitant whenever I see the Christian Coalition and Pat Robertson calling jews their allies and making policy proposals in the name of Israel. Since when are we close allies with right-wing conservatives? This weirds me out… But I don’t feel like writing about politics on this blog. Just my daily experiences… for the most part…. perhaps occasionally weaving politics in there.
For the past week while going door to door, I’ve nearly stepped on a toad. Different toads everyday, but one per day average. They always seem to hop out in front of me out of nowhere. Sometimes they feel like they are dropped from the sky. I know that’s the Passover story and not Rosh Hashanah. Still though, it makes my job take on somewhat of an apocalyptic sense of urgency.
Also, the roof of my temple fell in and destroyed most of the pews. Nobody was hurt, and somehow the torah wasn’t even touched. We’re having services this year in the church across the street. It’s hard to concentrate when there’s a huge cross right behind the rabbi.
Speaking of dropping from the sky by surprise…
I surprised my parents and decided to fly home for the day and celebrate the new year at home. Shout outs to flyi.com and my sister, the travel agent.
The big “Welcome” sign in the airport is sponsored by the Christian Broadcasting Network and features a ton of propoganda about their objectives(the 700 club, Pat Robertson, etc.). It makes me feel very nervous. I’d rather see pictures of dolphins and boats and the beach. Pat Robertson doesn’t make me feel “Welcome” to be home.
Oh well.
I hope the year 5765 is a good one for everybody.
