Comparing Apples to Oranges…
Posted: December 20th, 2004 | Author: themarkpike | Filed under: Stuff |I am in New York City. I wish I was still in Florida. The temperature today was in the single digits, and I’m not talking about centigrade. I guess you can’t compare (Big) Apples to (Florida) Oranges.
It’s been wonderful to see friends and hang out with my sister a bit.
It’s also been wonderful to be in a city that gets movies before anybody else in the world.
I had a hard time deciding between A Very Long Engagement, The Life Aquatic, or Bad Education.
I figured The Life Aquatic is going to be opening up nationwide by the end of the week, so there was no need to rush and see it in NYC for $10.50. Also, I was nervous at the box office that since it was the Life Aquatic, I would accidentally ask to see a manatee instead of a matinee. (Thank you, thank you. I’ll be at Caroline’s till Thursday. The 7:00 show is different than the 9:00. Tip your waitresses well). Furthermore, the reviews make me nervous. I’ll see it next week, in a cheaper city.
A Very Long Engagement was seducing me with its promises of Audrey Tautou, but I resisted the temptation because I promised a friend I would wait to see it with her. We should hurry up and go soon though, because it’s going to be a Very Short Engagement in theaters. Most of this country would rather see Tim Allen fall on top of a Christmas tree repeatedly, so they have to make room for that shit to play at the theaters.
So, I saw Bad Education (La Mala Educacion: a film by Pedro Almodovar). For those familiar with my Spanish adventures, you know that I am a huge fan of his work. If you really know me well, you know that I watched the film Adaptation in the same movie theater as Pedro Almodovar last year and congratulated him on his Oscar after the show. If you know me really really really well, you know I have a birthmark that kinda sorta resembles Australia above my ass.
The colors and shapes in his films are amazing. He is a film genius. This one was no exception. Although, I did find myself a little bored with the plot and pacing of the movie, even though it was supposed to be somewhat of a technicolor thriller. Maybe I’m just too accustomed to his formula? Maybe I’m being a film snob? Maybe I’m just afraid of drag queens?….
I guess the inherent problem with going to a movie in New York City is that there’s always more excitement, beauty, and intrigue within 3 square blocks than you could possibly fit into a movie……..
On the way home, I met up with my sister and found a photography book I had been looking for.
It’ll be the perfect distraction for the Bus Ride back to DC tomorrow.
It’s by Jason Fulford. Some of his stuff looks like this:
