If You Give a Mouse a Cookie…
Posted: January 11th, 2005 | Author: themarkpike | Filed under: Stuff |I just had my first experience with a mouse in the new apartment. I was sitting at the dining room table and this little dude just started scurrying over the living room floor. He was kind of cute and furry, and we made eye contact. He stopped to acknowledge my existence and then thought better of just sitting there. I realized that I didn’t really feel like having mice as my roommates. I didn’t know how to react so I just yelled, “Hey. You! Stop it right there! Whoa! I live here. Get out!”. The mouse did not respond for some reason.
The cats sitting on the couch, however, responded to my yelling. They seemed a bit perturbed, like I woke them from a cat nap. They looked at me inquisitively, to see what was going on, but they weren’t too curious (would it kill them to be a little more curious and attentive?). I pointed animatedly at the mouse, and said “sick ‘em”. With some urging, and several pep talks, the cat and mouse chase began.
It ended somewhere in the bathroom. The cat emerged victorious, and plopped the mouse down on the kitchen floor. I got the dustpan in order to throw the mouse outside. As I went to scoop up the carcass, it suddenly started scurrying away again. I looked at the cat accusingly and said under my breath, “pussy cat”.
Eventually, all was settled with the mouse, but I think the cats and I need to have a chat about their responsibilities in this apartment. Unless, of course, they want to do the dishes instead of chase the mice.
