Groundhog Day

We watched “Groundhog Day” in our 3rd Grade Sunday School Class. My teacher had a rather unorthodox approach to teaching Reform Judaism to say the least. On this particular day, I think she was using a Bill Murray comedy as a vehicle to discuss Judeo-Christian concepts of the Categorical Imperative, though I Kant be to sure. I was less than 10 years old and I was just happy that we got to watch a movie instead of gluing blue-macaroni on construction paper in the shape of the star of David. I always think of Sunday School on Groundhog Day. Would I want to relive this day infinitely?
….
In 5th grade Sunday School, the same teacher tried to teach us about the unfathomable loss of life in the Holocaust by saying that if we filled the room with M&M’s, each M&M would represent a person killed at the concentration camps. As a 5th grader, all I could think of was actually filling a room with that much candy. My mind wandered, and thought of the consequences of somebody opening the door of a room filled with that many M&M’s. I imagined a technicolor wave of chocolate covered candies roaring through the hallways. I imagined the look of horror on the janitor’s face when he saw the mess and I felt bad for him.
