Full-Time
Posted: August 14th, 2005 | Author: themarkpike | Filed under: Stuff |For those of you who read this on a daily, semi-daily, or bi-monthly basis, I would imagine you are at least remotely interested in the happenings of my life. This blog is, after all, a mostly autobiographical account of things that go on in the bubble of my existence. For nearly the past year, I’ve been writing about the “pseudo-adventures of a recent college grad.” I thought I’d let you know that the source of much of my writing material has vanished.
You’ve followed me through countless part-time jobs. I’ve been a door-to-door canvasser for the Democratic Party, and an election organizer in Florida. I nearly bought an Ice Cream Truck. I bought a Photobooth off of eBay and started a vending machine business. I delivered subpoenas to Alzheimer’s patients, psychiatrists, and city officials. I walked around major metropolitan areas dressed in a bunny rabbit costume. I was a bouncer at a nightclub. I worked at a bakery and wrote people’s names on cakes. I worked on the editorial staff of a non-profit that seeks to provide low-income families with empowering technology and informational content, and in the process of writing their newsletters I made more puns than Christopher Lee Rios. All of these jobs made me who I am today— a full-time employee.
You can imagine my surprise when I finally landed a job that had the word “benefits” in it. You can also imagine my surprise when I showed up for the job and all of my co-workers knew a little too much information about me from Googling this blog (Hi guys! Wanna go grab some coffee?).
This is a preemptive apology if this little space on the Internet gets less exciting. While the work I’ll be doing will be very stimulating to me, I’m not sure it will translate well for a written audience in the same manner as walking around Georgetown looking like Spiderman. Perhaps I’ll have to keep honing my fiction skills to make this place interesting? Or maybe I’ll just write descriptions of passengers on the buses during the commute? Or maybe I’ll write reviews of places to get lunches in Downtown DC? Or crazy Craigslist postings? I’m getting ideas already. Thanks for reading (full-time or part-time).
